President Biden has introduced legislation that if approved, would dramatically expand the Diversity Visa lottery system.
If President Biden's US Citizenship Act of 2021 is approved, the Diversity Visa Lottery will be expanded to provide 80,000 green cards annually, instead of the current 55,000. This would be a 32 percent increase in green cards issued through the program.
The Diversity Visa program - commonly known as the Green Card Lottery - is a Department of State program that provides 55,000 immigrant visas to countries with low immigration rates to the united States. As of 2018, the Diversity Visa program receives around 23 million applications annually.
