Yesterday President Trump extended the ban on new immigrant visas and work visas until March 31, 2021. These bans affect applicants who are currently outside of the United States and are applying for their immigrant or work visas at US consulates worldwide.
The immigrant visa ban affects immigrant visa applicants outside of the US, including diversity visa lottery winners. The ban exempts the spouses and children under 21 of US citizens, certain healthcare workers and EB-5 investors from the restrictions.
The work visa ban restricts the issuance of certain work visas, including H-1Bs, H-2Bs, J-1s and L-1A and L-1B, for applicants overseas. Please note that not all work visas are subject to this ban, only the visa types listed.
The extension will be in place when the incoming Biden Administration takes office and Biden Administration will have the authority to lift the bans. The Biden Administration has promised significant immigration reform, but advocates are unsure if the new administration will immediately rescind the travel restrictions.
